Give chance for teaching of Science and Maths in english to succeed – Lee Lam Thye

Bernama – Tuesday, March 10

KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) — There is no need to scrap the policy of teaching of Science and Mathematics in English.

Instead, the people should give a chance for the policy to work, said social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

“I am surprised why people are questioning the policy now after it has been implemented for six years.

“I can’t see the rationale of how the policy, if continued, can be a threat or a show of disrespect for our national language. Even the past UPSR results had shown encouraging signs about the policy,” he told Bernama here, today.

He was commenting on the heated debates and protests by certain quarters against the policy, which is currently under review by the Education Ministry. The results of the review are expected to be tabled to the Cabinet soon.

Lee said the people should also understand and appreciate the real objectives of the policy, which was mooted with the best interest of the future generations in mind.

“The policy is aimed at improving the English proficiency of our children. English has been the depository language of knowledge and our children must be fluent in it for us to stay competitive at the global stage,” he said.

Lee also urged the government to efficiently address shortcomings stemming from the policy.

“If it is a problem with teachers’ proficiency in English, the government should fix it immediately. But there is no need to scrap the policy,” he said.

He added that dissatisfaction and grievances should be channelled through the right avenues instead of taking the matter to the streets.
