Reuters – Thursday, March 26

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 – Malaysia’s six-month smoothed leading index <MYLEIN=ECI>, a forward-looking measure of economic activity, fell 3.6 percent in January, the Department of Statistics said late on Tuesday.

The smoothed index is adjusted for one-off statistical events. In December, it fell a revised 3 percetnt.

The six-month smoothed coincident index shrank 10.7 percent in January.

“The continuing weakness in the six-month smoothed growth rates of the leading index and coincident index indicate that the economy will continue slow down in the months ahead,” the department said on its website http://www.statistics.gov.my.

The leading index is the only forward-looking indicator released by Malaysia. In other countries, indicators such as purchasing managers indices are used to measure business confidence.
