Perodua to start scrapping programme on Mar 27

Posted on: March 26, 2009

Bernama – Thursday, March 26

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) — Perodua will introduce the car scrapping programme from March 27, instead of April 1, as earlier scheduled.

Perodua managing director Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar said the company was able to do so as it had completed all its processes ahead of plan.

“Perodua’s outlets have received many enquiries about the RM5,000 car scrapping incentive announced under the min-budget on March 10,” he said in a statement here today.

There are an estimated 4.8 million cars of 10 years and above on the road now. Of this number, about 300,000 are Perodua vehicles comprising the Kancil, Rusa and Kembara registered between 1994 to 1999.

Syed Abdull Hafiz also said Perodua wished to clear the misconception that it would be giving customers the RM5,000 voucher plus the market value of their old car.

“Since this is a scrapping programme and not a trade-in exercise, Perodua would not be paying anything over and above the RM5,000 incentive.

“If your old car is worth more than RM5,000, customers have the option to transact a trade-in plan for a new vehicle rather than scrapping it,” he added. — BERNAMA
