BEIJING (AFP) – – China will send buying missions to Taiwan with orders worth billions of dollars to boost the island’s struggling economy, the mainland government said Wednesday, in a fresh sign of warming bilateral ties.

Seven to nine Chinese business delegations are expected to visit Taiwan in the period until September, according to Yang Yi, spokesman of the Cabinet-level Taiwan Affairs Office.

A delegation from Southern China’s Guangxi Zhuang region set out last week and is expected to be back on Wednesday with deals worth 170 million dollars, he said.

In June, a team of TV manufacturers are scheduled to visit the island to buy 2.2 billion dollars of panel screens and other goods, he said.

Shopping lists of other delegations include agricultural products and home appliances, he added, without disclosing a value.

“We have always been concerned about the difficulties faced by the Taiwanese economy and would like to do as much as we can to help Taiwan alleviate the damages caused by the (global financial) crisis,” Yang said.

Taiwan and China split in 1949 at the end of a civil war. Beijing still regards the island as part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary.

Relations have warmed since Taiwan’s China-friendly President Ma Ying-jeou took office in 2008, with the two sides signing agreements that have led to regular direct flights, increased investment opportunities and a tourist boom.

Chinese President Hu Jintao has said talks with Taiwan on an economic pact that would encourage freer flow of goods and personnel across the Strait were likely to start in the second half of the year.
