Bernama – Friday, June 12

KUCHING, June 12 (Bernama) — UAC Bhd, which launched its innovative UCO Solid Wall System for the Sarawak market today, is eyeing export opportunities for its latest patented product.

Chief executive officer/managing director, Koo Hock Fee, said the public-listed company had marketed its product, which was earthquake-proof and suitable for modern day commercial, institutional and residential building construction, overseas, including the Middle East, South Africa and Association of South-East Asian Nations.

“At the moment UAC has just started to launch the wall system and marketing these products takes time but we are quite close to concluding deals,” he told a media briefing before the launch here today.

Koo said so far two construction companies were using the system for their residential housing projects totalling 4,000 units in Peninsular Malaysia.

The system, an alternative to the conventional construction mansonry, comprises UAC fibre cement sheets fixed onto metal studs which are then filled with a light weight cement mix.

It is being manufactured at its factory in Ipoh.

He said at present 40 percent of its building products, including cellulose fibre cement boards, were exported to 50 countries such as China and the Middle East.

Koo said the efficacy of the wall system was proven by its strong presence in Taiwan and usage in Hong Kong as well as China, to a certain extent.

“In Peninsular Malaysia, The Royale Chulan Hotel, Sepang Gold Coast and YTL Wimax Centre in Kuala Lumpur are using it,” he said.

He said following the Sabah market launch in Kota Kinabalu last month, the company was confident the system would also get good response from the construction and hospitality industries in Sarawak.

Based on tests conducted by Sirim Bhd, he said, the wall system was about three times lighter compared to brick walls.

“It also reduces site litter, is less labour-intensive and provides a cost-saving of nine percent besides higher quality finishes,” he said.

UAC, established more than 40 years ago, is a government-linked firm under the Boustead Holdings Bhd Group and Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera Group. It has a paid paid-up capital of RM74.4 million and shareholders’ funds of RM302.1 million as at Dec 31, 2008. — BERNAMA
