   Boyle was born in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland,[12] to Patrick Boyle, a miner, World War II veteran and singer at the Bishop’s Blaize, and Bridget, a shorthand typist,[13] who were both immigrants from County Donegal, Ireland.[14] She was the youngest of four brothers and six sisters.[12]

The recent spate of emails deriding some of the older Singapore political leaders show that, like anywhere else in this world, people’s memories are short! What the ‘old guards’ have done for Singapore is nothing short of a miracle. The grand old man deserves our respect; the younger political leaders would do well to learn from him!

The writer is a nephew of Dr Mahathir (former prime minister of Malaysia).
