Malaysia: The Feud

How Mahathir and Anwar became embroiled in a clash that threatens to send Malaysia into upheaval

by Sheri Prasso and Mark Clifford in Kuala Lumpur, with Joyce Barnathan in Hong Kong.

To Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who has a passion for flying and sailing, Malaysia’s annual air and boat show on the island of Langkawi was an event he hated to miss–even as his nation stumbled through an economic crisis. So Mahathir decided to hold the December 3, 1997, meeting of the Malaysian Cabinet on the island, instead of in the capital of Kuala Lumpur. Read the rest of this entry »

Malaysia: Contractors and The Malaysian Brain Drain By Koon Yew Yin

Posted by: Blog yOur Mind on: November 25, 2009

This article is too important not to be read by more people. It is written by Koon Yew Yin. Who???

Well, if you like Mudajaya, IJM or Gamuda, Mr. Koon was one of the founders for all three companies.

We certainly do not need more contractors – we must ensure that our resources are put into creating value to industry and economy, not creating layers after layers of profits being hived off.

The article was taken from Center For Policy Initiatives:

Article by Mr. Koon can be linked to:

 Note on the Author

I am a 76-year-old chartered civil engineer and one of the founders of the three larger construction companies listed in Bursa Malaysia. These are Gamuda Bhd, Mudajaya Group Bhd, and IJM Corporation Bhd.

I was a member of the Board of Engineers, Malaysia for three terms. I was also on the Sirim Board responsible in writing the Malaysian standard specifications for cement and concrete. In addition, I was the Secretary General of Master Builders Association, Malaysia for nine years.

These days, I am completely retired. My intention in writing this article is honourable. Many people may not like reading what I have written and the truth may be difficult to accept. Nevertheless, this is my considered analysis for the benefit of my country, the Bumiputera contractors and the construction industry.

It is an indictment of our system that IJM is able to compete internationally for contracts but yet is required to work as a sub-contractor to Bumiputera companies on the North-South Highway in Malaysia. Read the rest of this entry »

Australia – Virgin Airlines Desk Attendant: Do You Know Who Am I?

Posted by: Blog yOur Mind on: November 22, 2009

I suppose everyone of you must have boarded a plane before. Ever encounter any proud and arrogant joker like some sort of “Datuk” or “Tan Sri” shouting at the top of his voice at the check-in counter? Read this one. Very interesting……..especially the last bit ……

THIS SHOULD APPLY TO EVERY AIRLINE DESK ANYWHERE IN MALAYSIA – WHERE EVERYONE HAS SEEN THE “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM” ASSHOLEs everywhere: airports, restaurants, traffic lights……

An award should go to the Virgin Airlines desk attendant in Sydney some months ago for being smart and funny, while making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo. Read the rest of this entry »

Malaysia wishes to become a high-income country.

The following are true stories:

1) A Malaysian political leader had a heart surgery in Singapore.

The operation was successful. During his recuperation period, the political leader would like to thank three skilful doctors, including an anaesthesiologist.

He said: “Thanks to the Singaporean doctors…”

“I’m sorry, sir. I’m from Malaysia,” interrupted a doctor. Read the rest of this entry »

Malaysia: The Real 1Malaysia – Hannah Yeoh

A refreshing view from Hannah Yeoh

http://hannahyeoh@blogspot.com

The Real 1Malaysia

I just came home from a discussion on issues related to places of worship. I sat there for at least 3 hours listening to the numerous yet different suggestions, feedbacks and opinions from various groups present. One resounding message that sticks out like a sore thumb to me is this: if we continue to operate and regulate everything in this nation based on race and religion, there will be no end to it. Laws and regulations must not recognise skin colour.

Race-based politics have infiltrated our society so much so that for things to change, we need to totally eradicate it and start anew. We must leave no room for exceptions for the survival of race-based politics.

I have been blessed by an encounter I had in Angsana flats in USJ 1. I was invited to visit a young gentleman there who is wheelchair-bound. His name is Chin Kit. When I arrived in Chin Kit’s house, I was informed by his parents that he was out with his friend.

I waited for him to return home. I was curious to find out about his transport arrangement. When Chin Kit returned home, my eyes were fixed to his wheelchair. Behind his wheelchair was another young man, Azizul his name. Read the rest of this entry »
